"I've always adored the opulence, the extravagance, and the magnificence of men's fashion during the 16th-18th Century.
It was during this era that men were equally as fashionable and stylish as women. I wanted to revive and re-vamp the very same spirit for this year's Met Gala Theme.
By fusing together the undershirt style that was worn during the Rococo Period in the 18th Century, ornate applique, and the modern men's formal shirt (paired with violet dress pants and black & white wing-tip shoes), I was able to create a new contemporary look that embodied both the past and the present."
2020
I was in my second year of accomplishing my fine arts degree. Yet, I knew I had so much passion and hunger to make fabulous fashionable clothing and costumes.
Despite referencing fashion history, silhouettes, icons, and iconic objects onto some of my plates for my art majors, it wasn't enough to satiate that hunger; I wanted to start working with fabrics and teach myself fashion design.
When High Fashion Twitter (the online community I was a part of) announced in late 2019 that they would be hosting their own Met Gala alongside the actual one, I saw the opportunity to start pursuing my passion in this way. Even though COVID-19 caused a global lockdown in 2020, which in turn caused events to cancel, such as the Met Gala, the administrators of the online high fashion Twitter Met Gala decided to continue this virtual event. It would be a form of entertainment, an escape from the worldwide crisis, and a fundraising event for health workers, all at the same time.
And so, I created my first costume piece and showcased it for all the world to see.
